Yael Flexer

Yael Flexer is a choreographer based in Brighton, UK. Her work is primarily concerned with interaction; connecting with an audience on a human and visceral level.

Works are fast-paced and intricate, weaving digital technology, thought provoking and humorous text, original composition & lighting design.

Collaboration is key to her practice and works are co-created with Nic Sandiland, the creative team, Company members as much as participants in bespoke community commissions.

Yael originally formed the company as Choreographer in Residence at The Place Theatre, London. To date she has created 15 full-length productions, touring throughout the UK and internationally. Company commissions of dance and digital works include Brighton International Festival, Without Walls, Sadler’s Wells, The South Bank Centre & Barbican Centre, London, Stavanger University, Sandnes Kulturhus-RAS, Norway & Maslool, Israel.

Commissions as an independent artist include: E-Werk Tanz Festival, Germany, Motus Dance Festival, London Contemporary Dance School, Mapdance, National Youth Dance Company Scotland, Trinity-Laban, Hull Dance,  YDance, Scotland, Scottish Dance Theatre, Lila & Freefall Dance Companies, 60+ companies, Three Score Dance & Encore East and  a music video for Birdmask.

Yael has created numerous works for youth companies including the Centres of Advanced Training-C.A.T at DanceEast, Swindon Dance, Exeter & The Place among others. Recent Movement Direction and mentoring projects include Turning in a Vacuum with Visual Artist Rita Evans at the Towner Gallery, Eastbourne, international touring work with theatre artist, Tina Hofman,  mentoring of neurodiverse contemporary dance artist Adam Roberts, Liverpool and Dance Artist Ane-Iselin Brogeland, Norway. Yael regularly leads workshops, professional training and commissioned projects in the UK and internationally. 

Winner of The Jerwood Award. Yael  completed her PhD in 2013, she is a Reader in Dance  at The University of Chichester, where she also co-directs mapdance, the University’s MA  touring company.
