Frozen Progress 2001

Frozen Progress by Nic Sandiland. Four performers wearing winter coats on silhouetted by two lights in the background. One performer is holding a small white tent. Another small tent sits in the background.

A site-specific event involving durational performance and installations, presented at the two-hundred-year-old Royal Geographical Society Building in Kensington, London.

The performance juxtaposed themes from the Great Expeditions of the 19th & 20th centuries against the more mundane journeys of everyday city life. Artworks were distributed in different rooms around the building.

In one of these places, which displayed many of the original maps created by the epic explorers, was a fully functional radar. As viewers passed through the installation, a real-time representation of their positions could be seen projected as a giant radar screen alongside the maps on one of the walls.
