Weighting 2015

Weighting by Flexer & Sandiland. Two screens showing two different scences are attached to a metal scales construction. The screen on the left shows three male figures in a white space. The screen on the right shows a man and woman.

“Witty installation of dance and digital imagery in which a giant set of scales weighs the balance between futility and aspiration.”

- Judith Mackrell, The Guardian 2016

Weighting is a kinetic video installation formed of two video monitors on either end of a horizontal beam. The screens depict five performers who stand and wait in a Beckett-like fashion; why they are waiting is never disclosed. Every so often a performer cross from one monitor the other. Concealed motors within the mechanism synchronised to the performers’ movements tilt the beam as they cross from one monitor to the other, responding as if their bodies were physically present in the space.
